People who confuse “etymology” with “entomology” bug me in ways I cannot put into words!

Last night, I whipped up some grog and went down a rabbit hole about the word’s origins. Back in 1749, grog was an “alcoholic drink diluted with water,” named after British admiral Edward Vernon (aka “Old Grog”) who wore a grogram cloak. He diluted his sailors’ rum in 1740, and “grog” eventually came to mean any strong drink. “Groggy” showed up in 1770 to mean stumbling around from drinking grog and by 1832, it also meant staggering after exiting the fight ring.


Grog

  • 2 oz rum, light or black
  • 1/2 oz rich Demerara syrup
  • 1/2 oz lime juice
  • Shake all ingredients with ice
  • Strain over fresh ice into an old-fashioned glass
